After our first day of driving we parked in Greymouth for the night. I have to admit, after such a spectacular journey through the Southern Alps, Greymouth itself was a little underwhelming. Once an important port, Greymouth is now tired—full of largely disused industrial buildings. So much so that after checking out the river and the few restaurants we ended up driving to Hokitika for dinner.
However, Greymouth was our gateway to the west coast, and things skyrocketed from there.
