After a long drive from Dunedin, we arrived at Lake Tekapo, a gorgeous lake surrounded by grassy mountains on the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin. The township is very small and you really feel as though you have arrived in a forgotten part of the world. However, the hot springs and ski fields draw a big crowd in the winter months.
The only building that sits right on the lakefront is the Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935. If you can ignore the busloads of tourists stopping to take pictures (and yes, we totally joined them and took pictures) it’s a very beautiful and peaceful sight.
We had just one night at the lake and spent our time hiking around the shore before heading to dinner at Thai Tekapo, where the food was excellent, the wine cheap and the lake-side views spectacular.
